March Birthstone - Aquamarine

Most people find personal meaning and significance in their birthstone. Birthstone jewelry is also a great way to honor and celebrate the most important people in your life—and keep thoughts of them top of mind. Do you or your special someone have a March birthday? Consider jewelry that holds March’s birthstone, Aquamarine, as the perfect present! Your Pisces or Aries mate will surely appreciate the thoughtfulness and beauty of this gem.
The name Aquamarine speaks for itself, meaning water of the sea. Aquamarine immediately brings to mind its stunning pastel sky blue or the bright color of the sea. The serene color of aquamarine is said to cool the temper, allowing the wearer to remain calm and levelheaded.
For centuries, this timeless gemstone has been a symbol of youth, hope, health and fidelity. Beginning in the Roman period, the aquamarine was believed to possess medicinal and healing powers, curing ailments of the stomach, liver, jaws, and throat. During the Middle Ages, it was believed to be an effective antidote against poison. Aquamarines were thought to be the source of power for soothsayers, who called it the “magic mirror,” and used it for telling fortunes and answering questions about the future. It is said that Emperor Nero used it as an eyeglass 2,000 years ago. Much later, aquamarines were used as glasses in Germany to correct shortsightedness. In fact, the German name for eyeglasses today is “brille,” derived from the mineral beryl.
Since this gemstone is the color of water and the sky, it is said to embody eternal life. It was long thought that Aquamarine has a soothing influence on married couples, making it a good anniversary gift.
Aquamarines are found in a range of blues; from a pale pastel to a greenish-blue to a deep color. Darker shades of blue are increasingly rare and in turn, make the value increase. Aquamarine is frequently a pastel gemstone but the color can be more intense in larger gemstones, smaller aquamarines tend to be less vivid.
This gemstone is mined mainly in Brazil, but also is found in Nigeria, Madagascar, Zambia, Pakistan, and Mozambique.
