Disinfect Your Jewelry From COVID-19

Disinfect Your Jewelry From COVID-19

In our Summer Jewelry Care & Cleaning guide, Master Jewelers recommends regularly cleaning your jewelry to keep your jewelry collection looking its best. However, keeping your jewelry clean has become an essential need for your help. The COVID-19 epidemic has enhanced our cleaning efforts in hoping to discontinue its spread. We want to ensure everyone stays as safe and healthy as possible while keeping your jewelry intact.
A lot of Jewelry is made from solid gold or platinum, meaning it is sturdy enough to handle extensive cleaning methods.  For example, steam cleaning uses high temperatures and is a common method used by most jewelers to professionally clean fine jewelry. If you prefer a DIY situation, any kind of commercial jewelry cleaner, hot water, or soap will do.  However, one key thing to keep in mind is some gems and stones that cannot hold up to this intense cleaning. This would include most colored stones, opal, kunzites, pearls, tourmalines or emeralds. However, cleaning and disinfecting your jewelry properly are two different things. Here are a few tips to disinfect your jewelry during this coronavirus crisis.

Hand Sanitizer & Fine Jewelry

Hand sanitizer is perfectly safe to use while wearing jewelry. Most Jewelry is made with precious metals like gold, or platinum, they are sturdy enough to handle the formula. However, you should know that hand sanitizer could leave behind germs in your jewelry. Hand sanitizer will not disinfect your jewelry. The best practice is to clean your jewelry separately from your hands.

Disinfect your Jewelry from COVID-19

Disinfecting your jewelry is a simple task that can be done with isopropyl alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. Now, this may be different depending on the gems and metal but you are safe with solid Gold, Platinum, Diamonds, Rubies, and Sapphires. Please consult a jeweler you can trust if you are unsure.

Remove Jewelry Before Washing Your Hands

Best practice has always been to remove your jewelry before washing your hands or getting into a shower. Make sure not to cross-contaminate after you washed your hands by putting dirty jewelry back on. Wash the jewelry thoroughly and allow it to dry thoroughly before putting it back on. If you want to be crafty, add your jewelry to a sterilize cycle on your dishwasher. This will definitely ensure all germs, and bacteria have been removed.
